Just goofing around

Yesterday and today I have actualy realy been goofing around, doing everything and anything and nothing at all. I think because I’m sortoff postponing making the booklet for my next swap for the Hinges group at Milliande’s art community for women. We’re supposed to make a book with the secret belgian binding.

When I looked it up I was enchanted by it. the binding looks very appealing and intriguing. But I cannot, for the life of me, find any video’s of it anywhere. Just some tutorials with photo’s….in some foreign language. I lie, some are in english =).

I started a prototype booklet with the binding. Smaller than I want the real thing to be, no theme and not as elaborate.

I kinda like how it turned out and learned quite a bit making it.

Then I thought I would do a video of the making of the book for the swap… and so the stalling began. All kinds of questions popped into my head.

Should I make it a text only video, or should I talk the viewers through the process… English is not my first language, not even my second. I get by in writing, but will they understand me when I speak…

Should I film from above or just go with the place the camera is now standing. When I want to film from above, I will first have to drill a hole in my ceiling…etc.

I was driving me crazy and I promised myself I wouldn’t do that anymore.

Yeah, bad habits and all that.

So I painted some papers.

I thought I could maybe use them to line the cover of the book I was going to make.

But turned them into some art journalling work…

That I actualy kinda like, I just don’t have a journal big enough to fit them.

I also got distracted on youtube, don’t we all, by this thing they call a Midori travellers journal. I thought they looked cool and I was looking for something to protect my file folder journals while I was on the move.

So I found some leather.

Cut it to size.

Decorated it somewhat.

Added elastic bands. Those are actualy hair bands that got to big and lost some stretchyness. (I keep hairbands around my wrist at all times, you know, just in case.)

Slipped my current journal underneath the elastic band to test it out.

I’m not entirely happy with how it turned out.

But it’ll do for now.

I think I like smooth leather better, so when I make the real deal I will find some of that. This one is just for testing purposes only. I do think it’s cute though and I can see how it will protect my journal when in my bag =).

That’s it from me for now. I’ll let my subconcious decide what to do with the video, while I potter along. Still have to figure out what to do with my prototype secret belgian binding booklet. Should any of you have any ideas about how to use it, please let me know.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend.

  4. Sorry I cannot remember what your language is, but you write better english than some of us english (myself included) loving the journals and pages, I feel quite at home now on how my creative day went from one thing to another.

I ended up sketching when I intended to do some painting in the journal?

  5. Ooh Monique what an amazing post. Your trial journals are pieces of art in themselves and I can't wait to see how you develop them further. I am now insatiably curious about that secret binding technique and off to see what I can find.
Thank-you sooooo much for the inspiration.

  14. Fabulous books, Monique! Your binding looks great. There are written instructions with diagrams in the book Making Handmade Books by Alisa Golden (page 159) for the secret Belgian binding, but yours looks as if you've picked it up beautifully, even from a foreign language πŸ™‚

The folded leather wallet is a great idea too… and just looking at all the photos here shows what an extraordinary artist you are – so, no, don't drive yourself mad with questions about the video… just follow your artistic heart – and that will take you where you need to go!
